Art in Soho
Art in Soho Tour
SoHo (South of Houston Street) is an elegant neighborhood that initially became famous -- like so many areas of New York -- for the mass migration of artists seeking cheap squalor. Architecturally, it's recognized for its 500+ cast-iron facade buildings, a style unique to this area, most of which were built in the latter half of the 19th century. Now it’s a perfect place for shopping, dining, and feeling cool. But don't think that the culture was chased out by the commerce. We'll show you spots both historically and presently significant in the worlds of art and culture. As we wind through SoHo, you'll see the buildings that housed important art colonies, the current and former homes of celebrities stretching all the way back to John Adams, and a permanent public art installation called The Earth Room, which we'd rather show you than describe.
